In October, Bart Hölscher's film about Ruben van Megen premiered. The film was made possible by the Cultuurfonds, VSB fund, 1Limburg, Provincie Limburg and producer RBenH Media.
Hölscher, known for works such as ‘Het zijn maar Duitsers’ and ‘Broertje is verdwaald’, became intrigued by the original ideas and the story behind the designs of Atelier Ruben van Megen. He followed Ruben for almost five years and captured his creative process and urge to tell stories with his designs.
Director Bart Hölscher says: “Everything we use in daily life has to be thought up and designed. From wallpaper to a hanging lamp, from a door to an interior. Ruben is such an inventor, such a designer, such a maker. His open mind, his urge to create, I wanted to capture that in a film, a film with which I want to show that creativity and creative minds are indispensable, perhaps even more so, that they are of vital importance. Without these minds, nothing could and can exist.
In this film, the viewer sits next to me and what I experienced during the making process. The film is therefore very pure. It has been very successful in showing the dynamics in Ruben's life and work."
For Ruben van Megen, it is somewhat strange to be the subject of a creative process himself. "I am usually the one pushing the creative buttons myself. So it was a strange feeling that I have no influence on the result. But Bart has made a warm human portrait, which makes it a film for a much wider audience than just design enthusiasts. In the film you see my free work and how almost limitless room for experimentation leads to various applications in collectible design, interior and product design.
The film tells about my search for my own identity and how creation and innovation can only continue to exist in harmony with financial success. But it could have been about anyone's search in the world of design and art or perhaps about any entrepreneur. I hope that the film inspires, shows clearly what our beautiful profession entails and how complex it is."
